I need some serious feedback on this design. I'm still in the concept phase and I want to know what you like, dislike, and would like to see. Any and all comments are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Notes: - This would be done in Flash. - Other than logo, color palette is flexible. - I need to incorporate a small music component and controls. - ...
I agress with most point mentioned about, but personally i dont have issues with a standard text based nav.. to be honest if the arguement is that you will stand out more with icons, i dont know about that, everyone is doing that these days, so it is getting rather... well done.
I personally think, especially with a folio site, that the site should be very visual, but i think that it should focus on your work more than pretty bits and pieces that you put around the edge. But in saying this i am a very minmalist designer, i like to see things nice and clean...
I think the logo is a little big, and have a play with the colour as mentioned, with such a dark background colour i would go something fairly bright, for a bit of contrast...
Yeah that is about it though.
You are well on the way there mate, and to be honest most things i mention are just what i personally think, so you know... dont see them as gospel.
Thanks! Good points. I'm definitely a minimalist most of the time so I do want to keep things simple and focus on the portfolio pieces. So I am probably going to leave the nav text-based. I am going to play with colors and the logo size, but I do want to keep the colors of the logo so I'm kinda stuck. I feel like if I make the background color any lighter, the logo will just stand out even less. hmm
Now to me the idea of minimalism all depends on what is reflected in your portfolio.
1. If you've decided that you've adopted it as your personal style and it shows in your other work, then I think a minimalist portfolio will work. 2. If it doesn't reflect in any of your other work at all, then I wouldn't recommend doing it. 3. If your other work is a well balanced mixture of design styles, minimalism could probably work as well. 4. OR if you truly think you've got a decent amount of amazing work in your portfolio, then a minimalist design will work as well. Because then, your works speak for you and the portfolio design doesn't have to.
Be minimalist, but do it an outstanding way. Because though I'd hate to admit it, designers are a dime a dozen and so is a minimalist style. If you want your portfolio to jump out and grab an art director or other web employer, you've gotta spice it up with color and composition.
But like, tornandweathered said, this my personal opinion, and you don't have to take it as "gospel." However, always be true to yourself and keep high standards. Take your portfolio and put it next to the best on the web ask yourself if you think it can compete.
Our field's getting uber-competitive so I'd personally always want to maintain an edge.
Yea, I agree with Matt, the amount of different fonts is an issue. I like the stroke around the photo flow type navigation, it goes well with the rest of the look of the site.
I think your name and logo are too big, its kind of overwhelming, its not too bad on the main menu but in the gallery it seems like it doesn't work too well.
Oh yea, and I don't feel like the "loading..." text works well in that placement either, maybe smaller and in the middle of the circle? Its kind of disrupting the flow of the positive and negative space thats going on in the preloader page.
I actually like the palette, I think it holds together well and keeps the focus on what's important - the actual portfolio pieces. If you do decide on a color change, I'd suggest doing it with some type of background gradient.
The navigation does need some work though. I don't really like nav schemes that bring more options one a menu item is clicked/rolled over.

Wow, thank you. Those are some really great points.
palette - yeah, I do like the colors but I know a lot of people usually disagree with me on color so I wanted to keep it open. And I'm now reconsidering because you mentioned a gradient. That sounds good.
nav - super tough. I know what you mean about simplifying it, but I have so many sections and links I want to incorporate so it would be so hard not to have some sort of sub-nav. I'll think about it, if you come up with anything or have any examples, let me know.
logo - how else should I incorporate it? Do you mean to move it around and keep it less static? Or do you mean to just have more than one logo on the page?
I reeeeeally like the scrolling thumbnails bit, especially the comentary. I need something like this whenever I get my own website. A friend's supposed to be doing some work for me, but his computer's shot.
Hmmm...I WONDER where I'm gonna get somebody who does web design? Hmmmmm...

Anyways, keep off the crack and keep it real!

...ok, I'm mellow now.
There are actually only 3 fonts other than the logo. I only really changed the size.
I think I'm going to try shrinking my logo on the gallery page. Good thought.
The loading text is a bit out of place. I'll reconsider.
Thanks a bunch for all the great feedback. Watch me, and keep an eye on this as I update it.

Do you dislike any of it? Could you see any improvements to be made?
